Denise Cullen is a licensed clinical social worker who has spent her career working with end stage AIDS patients and their families. This has given her insight and a measure of expertise in many areas such as IV drug use, harm reduction, death, loss and grief.
She and her husband, Gary, lost their only child, Jeff Cullen at age 27 to an accidental overdose August 5, 2008 after 12 years of battling addictive illness (substance use disorder). He had been substance free for 6 months. They fought alongside their son in his efforts to attain lasting recovery. In honor of Jeff, they have gone on to advocate for ending the failed war on drugs and bring attention to the things that DO work.
They also administer GRASP (Grief Recovery After a Substance Passing), with face to face groups in 30 states and a very active online support network on facebook. Denise and Gary are the Co-Founders of Broken No More. Denise is Executive Director, while Gary, who owns two small businesses aside from his work in this movement, is CFO and more.
Denise is also a steering committee member of Moms United to End the War on Drugs.
